What is an RCD?
An RCD, or residual current device, monitors the electrical current flowing through a circuit and disconnects the supply when it detects a potentially dangerous imbalance. An inline RCD places this protection on the extension lead itself. It is an important safety control, but it cannot make a damaged lead, unsuitable appliance or wet connection safe.
Choose a lead that matches the equipment
· Check the appliance plug, current rating and manufacturer’s instructions
· Use a lead rated for the equipment and the working environment
· Select only the length required to limit clutter and trip hazards

Inspect before every use

Set up the work area safely
· Keep plugs, sockets and connections away from water and cleaning solution
· Route leads away from doorways, sharp edges, vehicles and busy walkways
· Use cable management where a lead could create a trip hazard
· Do not pull equipment by the cable or disconnect it by tugging the lead
· Fully unwind reels and coiled leads when required by their instructions
· Test the RCD using its test function as directed by the manufacturer
Testing, inspection and tagging requirements depend on the workplace, equipment and applicable Australian rules. Follow the site’s electrical-safety procedure and arrange testing by a competent person at the required intervals.

Does an inline RCD make an extension lead waterproof?
No. Connections must still be kept dry and used only in conditions permitted by the product instructions and ratings.
Can a 10-amp lead be used with any cleaning machine?
No. The lead, plug and supply must match the appliance’s rating and instructions. If uncertain, check with the equipment supplier or a licensed electrician.
Should a damaged lead be taped and reused?
No. Remove it from service, label it clearly and have it assessed by an authorised person. Tape is not a safe substitute for a compliant repair or replacement.
